Er erlebt an der Aragon-Front und in Barcelona die Wirren des Krieges \u2013 den ungleichen Kampf gegen die Franco-Truppen und die internen Auseinandersetzungen auf republikanischer Seite.\u00a0Die von Ken Loach erz\u00e4hlte Geschichte basiert zu einem gro\u00dfen Teil auf den Berichten von George Orwell, der 1936 und 1937 selbst als Freiwilliger in der POUM-Miliz gek\u00e4mpft hat.
